Membership Requirements

ASHI Membership Categories and Requirements

There are three membership designations of active professional home inspector in ASHI®.  These ASHI® membership categories are as follows:

Members (M)

Members of ASHI® have met the following requirements:

  • Passed the independant National Home Inspector Examination and an examination on ASHI's Standards and Ethics.
  • Had inspection reports independantly verified for compliance with ASHI's Standards of Practice.
  • Submitted proof of having performed at least 250 fee-paid home inspections that meet or exceed the ASHI Standards of Practice.

Candidates with Logo (CL)

ASHI Candidates with Logo Use Privilege have met the requirements for Member status, except:

  • They have performed a minimum of at least 50 fee-paid inspections but not yet performed the total of 250.

Candidates (CN)

Candidates have not yet met the ASHI membership requirements, however:

  • Candidates may be highly experienced inspectors who have just joined ASHI, or they may be novice inspectors who have completed training or otherwise entered the profession.
  • Once granted membership at any designation, ASHI members are expected to continue their education. They are required to earn 60 membership renewal credits every three years in order to keep current with new technology and building practices.
  • Their professional capability is measured against ASHI's Standards of Practice, which is recognized as the benchmark of performance in the home inspection profession.

General Requirements

  • ASHI Candidates and Members are required to abide by the Society's Code of Ethics, which specifically forbids home inspectors from active brokerage or sale of real estate, or performing repairs on homes that they inspect.
  • ASHI Candidates and Members also agree to perform and report inspections in accordance with the ASHI Standards of Practice.
  • The ASHI logo is widely regarded as the mark of a professional home inspector.  Its use by the ASHI membership is carefully controlled.

As you can see, fulfillment of these requirements takes considerable time and effort. ASHI Members are ‘seasoned’ inspectors, not beginners fresh from a one-week home inspection training school.

There is a lot of comfort for homebuyers in knowing they have made an informed decision about their home inspector.  By choosing an inspector who is truly qualified, the consumer can be assured there will be much less heartache with their purchase.

Chapter Membership Requirements

Chapter membership is restricted to individuals who already hold ASHI membership in good standing.  Chapter Members and Candidates are required to adhere to the Bylaws of the Chapter.

Chapter membership categories are the same as the national organizations.
